Let's Move - Latin Dance with the DEED Family

Pictured above: David and Tomoe Peele provide Latin Dance instruction to the LBJ DEED students, teachers, and parents.

"Get fit, start dancing!" David and Tomoe Peele, grandparents of DEED student, Kie Peele, Red Group presented basic “Salsa, Cha Cha and Merengue” dance steps on Thursday, March 18, 2010 to the DEED students. Dancing can give you a great mind-body workout. Researchers are learning that regular physical activity in general can help keep your body, including your brain, healthy as you age. Exercise increases the level of brain chemicals that encourage nerve cells to grow. And dancing that requires you to remember dance steps and sequences boosts brain power by improving memory skills. Dancing is great for helping people of all ages and physical abilities get and stay in shape. So if you’re looking for a fun way to stay fit and healthy, get up from that couch and start dancing! You’ll be glad you did!

Snapshot of the DEED ESL Project: Digital Storybook

Pictured above: Pinky Ecalnea is finalizing her digital storybook with Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera

In order to provide further enrichment to the DEED students, the ESL Coordinator/Teacher, Dr. Matilda Naputi Rivera, volunteered her time and provided a digital storybook project. Digital storytelling is a means of narrative expression linked to traditions of narratives passed on from generation to generation. It serves as a way for us to tell our story by authentically expressing our thoughts, feelings, actions, and other details about ourselves, so that we can be empowered and share this enlightenment with others.

The goal of this project was to use digital storytelling to build schema of English Language Learners. This allowed the students to jumpstart reading comprehension. As a result, the students were able to develop literacy skills, increase retention, build technology skills, think critically, and increase their motivation to read.
